The facts for your first Tax Research Assignment are as follows: You are a junior tax accountant and you were just hired by your first tax accounting firm. For your first official project a senior accountant in your firm, Sharon Brown, asks you to research a question asked by a client of hers. Her client has multiple sclerosis and can no longer go up and down stairs easily. He and his wife want to install an elevator in their home so that he can access the upstairs. Sharon wants you to research whether her client may deduct as a medical expense the cost of installing an elevator in his house, where the taxpayer has multiple sclerosis. Instructions: Please research the tax law and write Sharon a brief memo of no more than two pages, in which you communicate the results of your research. Use the format for communicating research findings discussed in chapter 15 of your textbook, and use as an example the sample memo found on p. A-6 of Appendix A.
