Question 1: Plastic waste is a major modern problem, with several environmental impacts. Please consider the diagram in Figure 1, which shows the lifecycle of plastics. Starting from the fossil chain, lie oil and gas, plastics are manufactured in the chemical sector to meet demand. After use, plastic waste has multiple potential destinations until it is stored for a long time. The system below represents a specific system, with a demand of 7500t/day. During consumption, about 5% of plastics are waisted and lost, meaning that around 95% of plastic end up as plastic waste. The system offers four waste disposal options: I- Sorting and Recycling enables re-using plastics, avoiding fresh products, but at a very high cost. On average, 70% of the input plastics to the unit are actually recycled. The rest must be disposed somewhere else. II - Incineration burns the plastic waste, producing electricity. Because there is a source of income, the total costs are reduced, making the overall cost rather low. During the combustion, most of the input mass is turned into gases, such as CO2, and only about 8% remains as ashes, which must be disposed somewhere else. III - Collection and Transportation allows for the final disposal of plastic waste into landfills. There is no conversion in this phase, as all the waste is sent to the final disposal. IV - Landfill allows for long-term storage of the waste. They represent a rather low cost for dealing with the disposal of solids, despite their many social and environmental challenges. Within the whole system, each unit has a specific cost to the whole system, as well as a specific contribution to the carbon emissions, in tCO2. The cost of each unit, the specific emission factor (in tCO2/t of input) and the available capacities are described in the table below: Based on the description and data available, management is interested in the following questions: a) What is the combination of waste disposal technologies that minimizes the total cost? b) In this standard case, what are the flow in each step of the diagram? c) Also in this standard case, what are the idle capacities? d) In order to assess the impact of climate mitigation, the government is attempting to stablish a target for reducing CO2 emissions. If this target is a reduction of 20%, relative to the standard case emission levels, what would be the optimal solution? e) In this case, how would the flows change within the system? f) In order to guarantee that the emission reduction target is met, the government proposes a penalty for each additional unit of CO2 emitted. Based on your findings, what should be the price of this penalty, in $/tCO2 ? g) Just as a reference, managements asked you to determine what is the lowest possible level of CO2 emissions that still meets demand and obeys all constraints. h) Unrelated to climate, the government also currently studies an additional fee for using the landfill. This aims as avoiding building new future units and avoiding local environmental impacts. The fee is currently estimated at 500$/t of stored material in the landfill.
