Counselor educators have been tasked to provide consultation to a school system. Consultants are tasked with training teams to work with personnel at their schools in developing prevention strategies to use with students who are at risk of dropping out and their parents. The consultants use their skills to train school personnel to be trainers and to deliver professional development at their own schools. This includes equipping the participants to develop interventions that are specific to their at risk student populations. The training is based on the participants (consultees) movement through the stages of group development and focused on group problem solving skills. The consultants want the participants (consultees) to feel capable to return to their schools and share knowledge about the needs of their at risk students and strategies that might work. They also discuss the importance of building relationships with parents and creating an invitational environment. Consultants provide a handbook to the participants that includes topics such as effective communication, building parent-school partnerships, and a bibliography on students at risk and drop out prevention.
