SCOTUS's Miranda decision in 1966 remains a controversial one. Some believe that the decision illustrates the American legal system's belief that individual rights and dignity are of utmost importance, even sometimes more important than truth. Others believe that the ruling ties the hands of police who are working to keep the public safe and secure. The ruling changed the requirement that police simply provide evidence that a suspect's confession was voluntary.
