Crackdowns and hot spot policing often involve the police using aggressive, "get tough" tactics in an attempt to reduce criminal behavior. Even the term crackdown implies a hard-nosed approach to policing. Prostitution stings, drug crackdowns and DUI checkpoints are examples of these crime reduction strategies. With such tactics comes the real possibility of the violation of citizens' civil rights. Is it proper to design and implement a strategy that can easily lead to or encourage such abuses?
