As a manager at our Community Health Center, I have been asked to provide a report on flexible workweek schedules compared to the standard five eighthour workweek. The standard five eighthour shifts for nursing staff are becoming a thing of the past and the desire to work alternative workweeks consisting of three twelvehour shifts or a flexible workweek schedule is increasing. Our nurses collectively feel that they would be more productive and avoid burn out with the extra days off with an alternative workweek of three twelvehour shifts instead of the standard five eighthour shifts.
In this report, I will go over why the three twelvehour compressed workweek is the best alternative work schedule for our organization. The following sections provide additional details about the research I have collected to finalize my recommendation.
Three twelvehour compressed workweeks provide nurses with the opportunity to work longer, uninterrupted periods with their patients. This continuity of care allows nurses to build a strong relationship with their patients. Nurses can dedicate more time to personalized care to each patient's needs. With these long shifts comes fewer staff switchovers as there will be only two shifts to cover instead of three, decreasing the chances of lost information or miscommunication between nurses. This approach could lead to improved patient outcomes, as patients receive care better suited to their individual circumstances.
Implementing compressed workweeks for nurses can help alleviate burnout by offering extended breaks between shifts and reducing the total number of days they need to work in a week. This schedule provides nurses with more time to rest and recharge between shifts, positively impacting their mental and physical wellbeing. These three twelvehour compressed workweeks allow nurses to better manage their personal and professional lives, leading to increased job satisfaction and reduced absenteeism
Our nurses have put forward a proposal, reflecting their collective belief that transitioning to three twelvehour shifts would be a more favorable arrangement for them. Requesting us to consider this change.
I conducted a survey involving of our nurses to determine their shift preference. The options presented were working three twelvehour shifts, maintaining the current five eighthour shifts, or expressing no preference. Below in Figure shows a pie chart with the survey results in percentages.
As shown in Figure of our nurses would rather work three twelvehour shifts, would rather continue working five eighthour shifts, and do not have a preference. Not only do many of our nurses prefer and benefit from compressed workweeks, but our healthcare organization benefits from it as well. By addressing the root causes of absenteeism and job dissatisfaction at our organization, making the switch to compressed work weeks, we can create a more positive and consistent working environment for our nursing staff. This strategy leads towards better patient care and a more motivated and engaged workforce.
By adopting the hour shift system we could potentially enhance our staffing arrangements. This approach enables us to allocate more staff during peak hours, alleviating stress on our nurses and ensuring that patients obtain the necessary medical attention. Maintaining a wellstaffed healthcare facility can provide timely and highquality care, reducing the risk of complications and ensuring a more positive work environment.
