Create a Fishbone Diagram

1. Start with the problem. Use an everyday example or an example from work. (Usually, the start is a storm cloud on a the process map or can be larger in scope. Just be careful not to make the problem too broad).

Do not use "understaffed" or general "miscommunication" as root causes. You need to dig deeper. The 5 Whys is helpful to make these generalizations more specific.

2. Categorize the "Effects." You can use the 6 Ps or makeup effects as it aligns with the problem.

3. Identify causes for the effects and make them the "bones" of the fish.
