The central processing unit has to execute programs and perform whatever functions are at hand. It decides what tasks are being performed and when it needs to access data or instructions to perform a task. It also decides where the data is stored if at all after the program has completed. The data or instructions to these programs have to physically be stored somewhere. There are different types of memory storage that are used$-$main memory and secondary memory. These act like long term and short term storage for memory. The CPU needs needs memory storage for a program that is currently running. RAM is used for this and can affect how quickly the CPU can do its work. The CPU also decides if data needs to be moved around to different parts of the memory storage. Ultimately, the CPU directs the operations going on and uses the different types of memory storage so that it can complete its tasks.
