(Housing | Corvallis Sustainability Coalition, n.d.) In this systems map, an arrow showcases a direct cause and effect that can come from taking these actions from any of the sustainability pillars. A dotted line means that there is an indirect action that overlaps with a different result ina different sustainability pillar. | chose to highlight this topic due to the increase in competition in the housing market (Corvallis Housing Market: House Prices Trends, n.d.) and the continuous enrollment increase at Oregon State. (Oregon State University Enrollment Reaches Recorel for 28th Consecutive Year, Nearing 38,000 | Newsroom | Oregon State University, 2024) These factors can cause residents of Corvallis to have a harder time finding affordable housing options, and others in our community are facing homelessness because of it. (Breaking Down Corvallis Homelessness Data - The Corvallis Advocate, 2020) In the Corvallis area, there is an organization named SafePlace, which creates microstructures that aim to help people go from homelessness to finding a place to stay. Organizations like these help to curb homelessness by giving opportunities to people by creating more housing units. (SafePlace, n.d.) With regards to energy efficiency, there are many different moving parts in this system like as firms or consultants, that can contribute directly to revitalizing homes through retrofitting by making them more efficient with up-to-date building systems. For the social aspect, policies that Corvallis politicians can consider, like the ones suggested in the map, can also directly contribute to stabilizing pricing for housing, and being able to install affordable multi-housing style living to help curb homelessness. It is also important to note that Oregon State is continuing to accept more and more students, which contributes to the highly competitive market. (Oregon State University Enrollment Reaches Record for 28th Consecutive Year, Nearing 38,000 | Newsroom | Oregon State University, 2024) When diving into the trends that are caused indirectly from each pillar, it is important to consider that the implementation of these efficient building systems through retrofitting cannot only contribute to lower utility costs but can also contribute to lower emissions as well. The same can also be said if policy were implemented to increase the multi-family housing in the Corvallis area, as the suburban style urban planning would generate more carbon emissions. Legalize More Multi-Family Housing - California YIMBY, 2021) To ensure that these results from the system map happen, it is important to recognize that this dialogue must be held with residents in Corvallis wha are college students. to those that reside here, and make efforts to contact the homeless population and support them by connecting them with organization like SafePlace, and uplift their voices on this matter. Additionally, the Corvallis area could help give incentives to firms to retrofit current houses, construct more multi-family style living, and pressure Oregon State to give more on campus options to their large student population. (McDonald, 2023) In doing this, it is possible to meet the 10th and 11th goal of the UN as we as a community advocate for the economic inequities we face while encouraging sustainable development through more diverse housing options that meet the needs of our community.
