Remember, LinkedIn is NOT "social" social media. It's "business" social media so it should look and sound professional. If you don't have a Linkedin Profile then now is the time to create one! You will create your profile following the following guidelines.
Photo (5 Marks)
- Include a good picture of yourself. Make sure it is appropriate (no selfies please). Make sure that you are SMILING!
- Make sure you are wearing appropriate clothing - (not the best place for your strapless dress or best nightclub clothes)
- Include both a banner image and a profile photo
Summary - Your Name - and Professional Headline (Brand Statement) (5 Marks)
- Be sure you spell your name correctly
- Use "caps" properly
- Include your Professional Headline (ie; Post Secondary Hospitality Management Student)
- Under Summary -expand on your skills, and highlights from your headline - include the most relevant goals, experience, skills, education and experience in this 2-4 sentence summary.
Education (5 Marks)
- Include all post-secondary education - starting with Seneca
- Use the school's actual name with the logo- if you can't get the Logo to show up that is OK
- Include the correct name of your program.
Experience (10 Marks)
- Use the proper names of your school & employers - no short forms
- Be sure to include all relevant experience - start with the most recent and work backwards (just like in your resume)
- Spell the names of your school and employers correctly
- Include any logos that are available to you on LinkedIn
- Include a brief statement about each employer - use the "one sentence" from your resumes
- List a few key job duties for each job
Certificates (5 Marks)
- Include relevant certificates in the LinkedIn Certificate Section
- Name of certificate & who issued it
- Logos are important
- Examples - OTEC, AODA, Smart Serve, Food Safety, Oracle, Cvent, ECPAT, First Aid/CPR
Connections (5 Marks)
- You must have a minimum of ten relevant, industry-related connections by the time I mark the profile.
- This could be instructors, supervisors, managers or other work contacts, or guest speakers who have come to your classes.
Groups (5 Marks)
- You must join a minimum of three industry-related groups.
- You must join the Seneca College School of Hospitality & Tourism Professional Networkand then pick at least two other groups that are relevant to the industry and in which you are INTERESTED.
- Include their logos on your profile.
- (Note: Many groups require that you "apply" to join the group. So do that and then wait for their "acceptance". Give yourself enough time so that you are in 3 groups by the due date).
- Pick groups to connect with other professionals. You will get news and information sent to you from each group. GREAT way to connect.
Formatting - Spelling - Grammar (10 Marks)
- Formatting is consistent and professional looking
- The use of "caps" is appropriate and consistent
- No spelling mistakes
- No grammar mistakes

- Completion of all sections.
- Photo - good quality and appropriate. Show your personality - be sure your dress and the background are appropriate - Choose an interesting banner (background image).
- Your name & professional headline - proper use of "capital letters" and "lower case letters".
- Summary - Develop a brand statement, expand on & highlights your skills, and be a concise (2-4 sentences maximum) overview of who you are.
- Education - Use the correct FULL name(s) of the school(s); include the name of your program; Include logos; provide a brief overview of what you're doing at Seneca that would make you a GREAT new employee.
- Employment history; as you do in the resume, start with the most recent experience and work backwards. Include the one-sentence company/customer descriptions that we did on the resumes; use company logos; say something about what you do there. (Do not list ALL of the duties as you do in the resume. Give a quick overview and list two or three key duties)
- Connections - A minimum of ten industry-related contacts; school instructors, current employers, past employers, volunteer supervisors, etc.
- Groups - A minimum of three industry-related groups; one HAS to be the Seneca College School of Hospitality & Tourism Professional Network. Include logos
- Certifications - All listed, spelled properly, logos included. (NOTE you have Certificates from Seneca 1st& 2nd semester).
- Spelling and grammar - This is SO important. Please proof your profile.
- Layout - This is SO important. Please proof your profile. LOOK at it. Would YOU be impressed? Would a recruiter be impressed?
