For this analysis, you will continue to analyze the same elements you have focused on before (below), but you also want to make sure to provide your position (should be in opposition in some way to the article) and identify potential counterarguments or objections to the text you chose.

Your purpose here is not necessarily to argue, but rather to generate as much material and discussion as possible to fully elucidate the issue, to arrive at perspectives, points, and ideas you had not considered.

Speaker- Identify the speaker. Is the author scholarly? Do they make a serious attempt to present accurate information? Is the author an expert in the field? What are the speaker's credentials? Does the author make reasonable inferences, use reliable evidence, and make it clear when he or she is expressing an opinion? What background information do they provide that helps you to understand their argument or their position?

Occasion-What can the audience gather might have been going on at the time the piece was written? How does the author's information affect the reader's perception of the subject they are learning about?

Audience-For whom is this text written? Consider specific age groups or ethnicities. How does the speaker make it clear for whom this is being written? Who is not the audience? How does the speaker engage the audience so they are more receptive to the information?

Purpose-What is the author's purpose in this text? Is to inform? Are they attempting to create a mood or an atmosphere? Are they using facts and statistics to educate their audience or is it to persuade? How can you tell the difference? What does the writer hope to make clear to the audience about the subject? What does the author want the audience to think or to do?

Subject-What is the subject of the text? Is this an important subject to discuss? What new information have you, the reader, gained about the subject of the text?

Do you feel compelled to take action? Do you agree with the author's stance or points regarding the subject?

Tone-What can you gather about the speaker's attitude throughout the text? Does it change or does it remain the same?

Does the author's language reveal bias? What does the author's tone indicate about his or her attitude? Does the speaker use connotation or figurative language that may signal bias?

Toulmin Model Considerations:

Discussion Assignment

For this week's discussion,you will discuss one of the Toulmin texts. These have been provided for you in the Critical Reading Analysis assignment sheet in the Week 8 folder.

Make sure you have read one of the assigned texts.
