Critically Analyze a Movie from a Project Management Perspective The purpose of this group assignment is to evaluate your understanding and ability to identify project management concepts. You are asked to watch a movie and evaluate the areas of project management as they were applied in the plot and characters in the film. This assignment is worth 7% of your final grade. Only one submission per group is required. The names of all participants should be included on the cover page. Only those who contribute to the submission should include their name on the assignment. Due via blackboard by November 17 (i) 11.59 PM EST The Assignment 1. Choose one of the movies listed. Watch and analyze it from a Project Management point of view. 2. Select five of the project management concepts listed below and discuss with examples, how they relate to the characters and projects in your chosen movie. Be sure to comment on what was done and how well it was done. 3. Provide a summary of the project plan. Note - this assignment is NOT a look at how the movie was made, the camera angles, productions costs, or associated risks, etc. You are to assess the characters, projects, and events in the movie itself. The Martian (2015) - An astronaut becomes stranded on Mars after his team assume him dead and must rely on his ingenuity to find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. Note: that while the movies may not be 100% accurate/realistic regarding the details and possibilities, please use them as factual for our learning purposes. Grading for each of the five knowledge areas includes 1. Describe what the characters did to demonstrate the project management concepts (be specific). Use headers to separate the five knowledge areas. 2. Critically evaluate how they performed in those areas. What worked-what could have gone better? 3. Finally, provide an overall summary that evaluates their entire project plan in its totality. Choose 5 of the Project Management knowledge areas below and relate them to the criteria above as it pertains to your selected movie. Be sure to check out the included rubric. 1. ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE - what was the project structure from a project management perspective? Identify the functional areas of this project and the contributions that needed to be made. Identify people, groups or organizations that could impact or be impacted by the project. Analyze stakeholder expectations and their impact on the project. Create an organizational chart to support your thinking. (Chapter 3 ) 2. DEFINING THE PROJECT (SCOPE) - define the project using a Project Scope Statement. Include limitations and items excluded from the project. Discuss the various stages of the project from a project management perspective. (Chapter 4) 3. WORK BREAKDOWN STRUCTURE - create a WBS to identify all tasks that need to be completed for the project to be successful. (Chapter 4) 4. RESOURCES MANAGEMENT (TIME AND MATERIALS) - where and how were the materials/resources in the movie procured? Identify restraints on materials. What was the time available to complete this project and identify events that affected timing. (Chapters 5 \& 13) 6. COMMUNICATION PLAN-create a communication plan and identify who needed to know what information, with what frequency and what method of communication was used. Identify any challenges in the communication plan. (Chapter 4 ) 7. MANAGING EFFECTIVE PROJECT TEAMS - there is a clear hierarchy in the movies, but the projects required more than just a series of orders. Describe the techniques used to build an effective project team and discuss (good or bad) how successful they were. (Chapter 11) 8. PROGRESS AND PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENT - what is the definition of success for this project? As it progressed through its various tasks and stages, how was performance measured. How did the project team deal with setbacks? (Chapter 13) 9. RISK MANAGEMENT PLAN - an integral part of any project since things almost never go as planned. What risks were involved in this project? What was the likelihood of them occurring? What were the potential impacts? What was the plan for handling each risk? (Chapter 7) 10. PROJECT CLOSURE - characterize the type of project closure and determine if there was customer acceptance. Evaluate team and individual performances. What resources were released. In the final evaluation of the project-was it a success or not? Can the learnings be transferred to future projects? (Chapter 14)
