Critically discuss, with relevant examples, whether the COVID-19 pandemic has brought about the end of overtourism and tourist mobility or will the future of tourism globally and in the Pacific require more responsible management. In your essay, examine the socio-economic impacts of COVID-19 on personal travel, tourism destinations, attractions, hotels and restaurants using international/local examples and personal reflections. History has shown us e.g. post 911 that international tourist flows soon return to normal, but under what conditions will this be possible given the numerous border closures, new visa restrictions and reduction in air flights and cruises. To this end, suggest solutions for the future of international tourism in developing countries and discuss whether or not tourist flows will return to the 'bad' old days of mass tourism/overtourism (was this ever the case in developing countries), the types of tourism that would be more suitable and how these can be more sustainably managed as well as alternative forms of leisure that people may choose to engage in.
