Question:
Cultivate Negative Capability
As we progress on our professional journey, we will encounter setbacks and hopefully learn from them. We will find also that some things are just out of our control, and that we cannot always predict what will happen. This is because everything in the universe is in a state of constant flux, the only solution for this is to let the mind absorb itself in what it experiences, without having to form a judgement on what it all means. Greene, R. (2012). Mastery (p. 181). Penguin. Dr. Randy Pausch said, "Experience is what you get when you don't get what you want." In my opinion, this rings true in all aspects of life, no matter who you are. For me to cultivate negative capabilities means to learn from mistakes and setbacks.
Alter Your Perspective
As we experience events or meet new people, we do not stop to consider all aspects or details. Instead, our brains are hard wired to categorize these experiences based on expectations and past experiences. This categorization is the main characteristic of the Conventional Mind. Creative people have the ability to resist this type of categorizing because they tend to look at things from several different angles, allowing them to see things someone with a conventional mind may very well miss. Greene, R. (2012). Mastery (p. 191). Penguin.
Revert To Primal Forms Of Intelligence
When spoken language was invented, it gave our ancestors a way to communicate. By thinking in words, they were able to imagine more possibilities which they could communicate and act on. The downfall of this being the fact that we lost the previous flexibility and became dependent on words for thinking and as a result we lost our connection to the senses- sight, smell, and touch. Language is a system that is best used to communicate socially. When it comes to discovery, we should rely on our primitive senses. Greene, R. (2012). Mastery (p. 195). Penguin.
Conclusion
I believe that everyone should learn from their experiences in life because if we don't we will be doomed to repeat our mistakes over and over. Also looking at challenges and tasks from unconventional viewpoints will allow me to see things differently than others, allowing me to have an advantage by noticing things or problems someone else may not notice.
