DATA 320 Module 1 Framing the Problem Overview The goal of this assignment is to understand the importance of framing the problem and how to apply the 5 Whys Approach to a problem. You will: Analyze the problem in the scenario provided to you Provide real-world examples when root cause analysis was used Create a visualization of a root cause analysis Create a PowerPoint presentation to share what you have analyzed Scenario You have just been hired by a candy manufacturing company. They are getting a lot of complaints that the candy conservation hearts they make for Valentines Day. Customers are complaining that some of the candies dont have any words printed, some candies have words misprinted, and some have only half of their words. Below is an image of examples of conversation hearts. Photo credit: Getty Images, Christine_Kohler, 1200840321. You have been asked to try to analyze what is the problem around the candy hearts. You do some research and find out that two years ago, the company bought a new printer that is supposed to mark each heart with a message using red edible dye. The old printer stopped working because the chemicals in the dye were changed and had to be replaced. When the company bought the printer, one of the manufacturing engineers, Larry, was trained and learned how to calibrate the machine. This was working fine until six months ago. Nine months ago, Larry was transferred over to the chocolate division and now only works on creating chocolates. He was replaced by a new manufacturing engineer, Melinda, who never received formal training from the printer company due to budget cuts. Instead, Larry spent one day with Melinda showing her how it works. Seven months ago, the printer company sent an email that they were going to do a software update on the machine. They ensured the manufacturing company that it would be done remotely and would not disrupt production. The company only has a quality assurance of a sample that is done on the size, taste, and color, but not the printed words on the hearts. Performing your analysis You have been asked to help the manufacturing company to figure out how to fix the problem. They would like to know what approach you think would help them. They need some convincing and you need to provide them examples of problems faced by other organizations and show them how a problem can be framed and how the 5 Whys Approach can help an organization. On the surface, the problem with the candy only appears to be with the appearance, but the leadership of the manufacturing company does not want to take any risks related to food safety. You have found this guide for conducting a food safety root cause analysis provided by Pew Charitable Trust, a nonprofit organization that performs global research and is a public policy change agent. To do this, you will create a PowerPoint presentation with the following slides: 1) Title page (title, name, date, class number, professor name) 2) What is a root cause analysis? 3) Provide three examples from the guide when root cause analysis was used 4) Create a visualization of the conversation heart problem (you can use one of the visualizations provided in the attached PowerPoint presentation) 5) Summarize what happened, why it happened, and how to prevent it in the future 6) APA Reference page Consult the following resource for Best Practices for PowerPoint presentations. Be sure to adhere to these best practices when creating your presentation: https://alum.mit.edu/best-practices-powerpoint-presentations In order to provide enough detail and not exceed the best practices for slide content, you will need to use the Speaker Notes function on each slide to add additional detail. You do not need any knowledge of manufacturing, food production, or candy making to answer these questions, just use the information provided in the assignment description, common sense, and your imagination! Final Instructions on Submitting Your Assignment You will submit your PowerPoint in the Assignment in LEO to be graded. References The Pew Charitable Trusts. (2020, March).
