- Data Flow Diagram
In an ideal online order processing system for 3-dimensional (3D) printing services the following activities take place. A STL file is a file type that is used in 3D printing. A STL file represents a 3D model, which then needs to be "sliced" into many layers to be 3D printed.
The customer uploads online a STL file of the 3D model for printing and completes a request form.
The STL file is then checked to see if it is printable. If so, a 3D sample of the final product is produced, and this 3D sample is sent back to customers for review by courier which is an outsourced third party company. If the customer approves this 3D sample, the customer himself/herself needs to confirm the 3D printing order online. The confirmed print order is then passed to the 3D printing company for actual printing of the order, and a confirmation of the expected delivery date is sent to the customer.
From the above description, draw a diagram showing the flow of input information (and/or data) and output information (and/or data) to and from processes within this order processing system and any external environmental elements that interact with this order processing system. In this diagram, you must identify the following:
- Internal processes inside this order processing system
(9 marks)
- database stores, external environmental elements that interact with any of the processes identified in (a)
(7.5 marks)
- input and output information (and/or data) to and from each of the processes, database stores and external environmental elements identified in (a) and (b)
(12 marks)
Note: 0.5 mark will be given to clarify of the data flow diagram.
(Hint: there are three environmental elements that interact with this online order processing system, and three main processes in this online order processing system. State any assumptions if any you make about this system.)
