Data loss prevention $($DLP$)$ relies on the ability to read data to do its job. If a file or network traffic is encrypted, and the DLP system has no insight to that encryption, then there is no way for the DLP to see the contents of that packet. If I$$m looking for credit card numbers in an Excel spreadsheet, I$$ll need to decrypt it first. Inside the enterprise, we can decrypt the data before it is released if we have the keys. This is a lot of work and resources to effectively compromise your own cryptography, and it introduces risks to the enterprise. What are these risks? Is it worth the risk to your network to inspect encrypted data before it reaches the endpoint? Why or why not?
