You were given temperature measurements at several locations across the country over a period of time

(i.e., a time series for each city). Consider the following scenarios and select a similarity measure that

would be meaningful to use for each case. Justify your answer.

a) You want to figure out which cities have a similar temperature profile.

b) You are just interested in comparing trends in the time series (not absolute temperature differences).

c) In some studies, it is important to focus on anomalies in the data. So, we transform the real valued

temperature time series at each location into a binary time series that is 1 if the temperature is

extreme, and 0 otherwise. You need to compare two locations with respect to anomalous events.
