Data Set #1 - Estimating a model by hand

Here is a folder with several ::scatterplots of bivariate data sets:: labeled by subject. Choose one that you think looks interesting (or use the scatter plot from a data set of your own choice, see the note above).

1. Describe the strength and direction of the correlation, then estimate the correlation coefficient, r.
2. Discuss some real-world reasons why you think this relationship exists:
3. Do you think x causes y? Justify your answer.
4. Do you think y causes x? Justify your answer.
5. Identify two possible extraneous variables and discuss how that variable might affect each variable x and y.
6. Decide if you think there are any outliers. Discuss if they appear to be high leverage or low leverage. Will you remove them from the data set or leave them in?
7. Draw your estimate for a linear model onto the scatterplot, then estimate the y-intercept and one other point.
8. Use those two points to compute the slope of your model, then construct the equation of your model.
9. Explain what the slope means in the context of your variables (i.e. "as _____ increases/decreases by ____, then ______ increases/decreases by______"). Use units in your description.
10. Estimate one data point in the data set, compute its residual and describe what this residual means.
