One recurring theme which we shall cover in this course is the role of ethical analysis in the execution of business decisions. As you prepare to submit your primary post, please choose from one of the following two topics: Topic 1: Social media giant Meta (formerly Facebook, Inc.) owns Instagram. Former employee and whistleblower, Frances Haugen, came forward in October of 2021 revealing internal studies conducted by Meta indicating the impact Instagram has on women, and in particular teen girls. Internal Meta researchers initiated a study, called "Teen Mental Health Deep Dive," and discovered that Instagram users, more than users of other forms of social media, suffer from the issue of social comparison. The platform focuses heavily on the body and lifestyle. Results of the internal research revealed the following: - More than 40% of Instagram's users are 22 years old and younger, and about 22 million teens log onto Instagram in the U.S. each day, compared with five million teens logging onto Facebook, where young users have been shrinking for a decade. - 32% of teen girls said that when they felt bad about their bodies, Instagram made them feel worse. Comparisons on Instagram can change how young women view and describe themselves. - 13% of British users and 6% of American surveyed traced the desire to kill themselves to Instagram. - "Teens told us that they don't like the amount of time they spend on the app but feel like they have to be present," an Instagram research manager explained to colleagues, according to internal documents. "They often feel 'addicted' and know that what they're seeing is bad for their mental health but feel unable to stop themselves." The Wall Street Journal reports that, "For years, there has been little debate among medical doctors that for some patients, Instagram and other social media exacerbate their conditions. Angela Guarda, director for the eating-disorders program at Johns Hopkins Hospital and an associate professor of psychiatry in the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, said it is common for her patients to say they learned from social media tips for how to restrict food intake or purge. She estimates that Instagram and other social-media apps play a role in the disorders of about half her patients." Does Meta have an ethical obligation to its Instagram users?
