Description

Policy Debate (Constructive statement, 4 min; Rebuttal, 2 min; Conclusion, 2 min): You will engage in a (team debate). You will present your evidence-based claims with the consequences of each claim (alternating between the affirmative and opposing sides). You will respond to the opposition with a rebuttal. You will present your conclusion. The debate is discussed and evaluated by the instructor and the audience, utilizing various debrief strategies including question and answer.

Requirement

Resolutions for this debate call for a particular action on the part of a government or similarly powerful group. The resolution uses "should" language but is broad enough to encourage your creativity on the "pro" side of the debate. You are on the pro side of the debate and should propose a plan, then focus on the advantages of the plan.You are expected to weigh arguments in a cost-benefit analysis framework. The policy resolution examines global forces shaping society in this lens. This debate requires both the formal outline and "evidence cards" (completed by you, built from the evidence points at the end of the formal outline). The formal outline should be constructed in the proper format with the constructive statement being outlined as a proper formal outline (the introduction, main points and conclusion).

Instructions

Debate Structure:

1. A 2 v. 2 team debate (4 total participants).
2. Resolutions should be written by the faculty to be fairly balanced.
3. You will coordinate your group so that you are evenly divided on the Pro side of the resolution.
4. The constructive statements must include three constructive contentions, which each include a claim with a chain of reasoning and evidence supporting the claim (4 min)
5. The rebuttals must respond to each of the Constructive Contentions provided by the other side (2 min).
6. The conclusions must include the top reasons their side ultimately wins the debate by weighing the extent of the impacts (2 min).
7. You are required prepares for all parts of the debate with the formal outline.
8. Sources are properly cited with oral citations, in-text citations and reference list using correct APA style (APA with Calibri 11 font).
9. You must prepare 10 digital evidence cards that follow the established guidelines (Please note that these are not the same as your evidence points on the outline).

*You will bring approximately 10 evidence cards to the debate and these will be submitted electronically. This is needed for you to prepare for the different possible directions the debate could take.

An evidence card usually contains: 1) a single sentence assertion, in your own words, that the evidence will support; 2) relevant citation of author, date, etc. for the source you consulted; and 3) a paragraph or less of direct quotation that makes the case for your claim.

Debate Topic: Governments should restrict the development and use of Artificial Intelligence.

You must argue the Pro (in favor) side of the debate topic.
