You may remember that in our meeting last week, we discussed the need to allow promising junior staff to
gain experience in the different parts of the company. In particular, I mentioned that my secretary Miss
Somying, was an excellent worker who had the potential to become a future GMs personal assistant, and
should therefore be encouraged.
Subsequently, I understand that you talked to her about the vacant post as secretary to your Deputy, and
suggested she might wish to apply. Unfortunately, she believes that this approach was a sign that you were
not happy with her work, and that you would like her to leave. Miss Somying is very upset and I have had
great difficulty in persuading her that this is not the case. As you appreciate, here the GM is regarded in the
light of a father, whose every look is watched for a sign of favour or displeasure. Perhaps we should leave
this matter for the moment, until there is more understanding of the practice of staff development within

With regard to our discussion concerning the need to remove Mr Narong who is not satisfactory as Finance
Director. As I explained, he was originally promoted to the post by your predecessor in the expectation that
when he found himself overwhelmed by his new responsibilities, which he is not qualified to fulfil, he would
resign. Unfortunately, this has not proved to be the case. Although, as you have noted, he is clearly under
stress and avoids meetings with you at which his difficulties may be exposed, he shows no sign of leaving.
What further action would you wish me to take?
