Use Minitab to analyze the experiment and show which factors have the most effect on the outcome. You may conduct this assignment with one other partner. Both will earn the same grade.

How to conduct an experiment is covered in Part 4 of Chapter 9. Follow this procedure:

1) Select the output variable. If you are doing the experiment on dissolving sugar cubes in water, the output variable of interest to us will be the time it takes to dissolve the sugar totally. If you are making popcorn, the output will be how many kernels get left after the time is over. For baking cookies, it could be a Likert scale from 1 to 10, as to how much someone liked the cookies.

2) Identify the inputs that you will be using. If you are doing the experiment on dissolving sugar cubes in water, the inputs can be the temperature of the water--water from the cold tap, water from the hot tap and an equal mixture of the two, it can be the sugar in a cube form or crushed form, and it can be stirring the water with a spoon and not stirring. If you are making popcorn, the input can be 2 or 3 types of popcorn, the power of the microwave used, the time for the microwave used. For baking cookies the inputs can be the temperature of the oven, the type of cookies, and the time for baking.

3) Aim for creating a 2 X 2 or at the most 3 X 3 experiment. Using Minitab, select the runs and randomize them.

4) Conduct the experiment with all the runs.

5) Enter the data into Minitab and analyze the experiment as shown in the lecture.

6) State what inputs gave you the best output. For dissolving sugar, state which input factors gave you the least time. For making popcorn, which input factors gave you that least leftover kernels. For baking cookies, which input factors gave you the best cookies.

7) Run a confirmation run and validate the results.
