Design problem:
A bicycle has many components that will be subjected to various types of loads during its operational life cycle. An example bicycle is shown in the Figure below where most of the components are identified for the specific bicycle shown. All these components must be designed for strength so that they can withstand the loads applied to them during the life cycle of the bicycle. Apply "reverse engineering" approach to a bicycle by following those steps:
1. Think about all scenarios and define an extreme misuse situation.
2. Identify which part on the bicycle is more likely to fail at that situation.
3. Draw a sketch(model) of that part and a free body diagram to show external forces
and moments.
4. We havent covered the stress analysis yet in lecture, but for now give a reasonable
guess on where are the critical cross-section and points of the part that have the
maximum stress under those loads.
5. Give a suggestion on modification of the design of this part to prevent possible
mechanical failure.
6. Check the material of this part and find the strength of this material (Google it or you
may find info of some materials in Table A-22). Then give a reasonable factor of
safety and calculate the maximum allowable stress in this material. Be careful when
using strength values, think which strength is more reasonable in this scenario
