Design Studio Session MultiStorey Office Building
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
You need to be able to demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of:
how to undertake simple structural modelling of a real situation.
how to combine the loadings with safety factors to generate the worst conditions.
how to calculate design stresses and forces from factored loadings.
how to undertake the design of the structural elements in steelwork.
INFORMATION
You have been supplied with the plan layout and elevation views of the office building in Figure The proposed building plan layout is mathrm~mtimes mathrm~m long and is a fourstorey steelframe building. The flooring system used throughout the whole building is precast concrete hollow core slabs. The location and dimensions of the stairwells and lift shaft opening are shown in Figure
As the lead structural engineer, your task is to design the building structure. You will need to inspect the plan layout and elevation views to determine information on the building's geometry, materials, and sections. Not all necessary details may be provided, so it will be up to you to make informed engineering judgments where needed.
DESIGN AND CALCULATION:
Propose an appraisal of the design viable solution in structural steel for the building.
Carry out a load assessment on the floor of the building, considering all floor loading are same.
Design appropriate sections for the following elements subjected to the worst loading conditions, considering all possible failure modes.
a Primary and secondary if any beams
b Column
c Connections beamtobeam and beamtocolumn
d Base plate
Calculate the embodied carbon of the whole building structure following the IStructE guide "How to Calculate Embodied Carbon". Considering only the beam and column elements. Neglecting the staircases, foundations and all connections.
Give recommendations on how you can optimise your design to lower the embodied carbon of the whole building structure.
Ensure all calculations are laid out following standard design office practice and thev are completed to a professional standard.
