As the high school Athletic Director, it is my goal to continue to improve and add to the sports our students can participate in. At the request of the Superintendent, I have investigated adding a new sport to our high school athletic program. After research, I am proposing the addition of boys volleyball for the upcoming school year. This proposal outlines the rationale for the addition of boys volleyball, estimates the student participation, and provides a breakdown of the costs incurred for the running and upkeep of the program. It also has a video presentation plan and an extensive spreadsheet to support this recommendation.

Rationale for Adding Boys Volleyball

The justification for including boys volleyball in our school's athletic program is rooted in several significant factors, including the growing popularity of the sport, the benefits to male student-athletes, and the potential for greater school spirit and community involvement.

Growing Popularity and Interest in Volleyball: Boys volleyball has been experiencing a surge in popularity at the high school level, as evidenced by increasing participation rates across the country. As of 2023, boys volleyball is also one of the fastest-growing sports in high school, according to the National Federation of State High School Associations, with a very large number of schools adding a boys volleyball program. This phenomenon nationwide shows that the sport has become more and more popular along with the ever-increasing number of young males who want to play. Meeting Gender Equity Requirements: Title IX mandates that schools provide equal opportunity for male and female student-athletes. Even though volleyball has traditionally been a sport of greater opportunity for female students, adding a boys volleyball program will balance the genders and maintain our school in Title IX compliance by providing male athletes with another competitive sport. This will help ensure inclusiveness and allow male students to engage in a sport of choice. Physical, Social, and Educational Benefits for Students: Volleyball fosters many physical, social, and intellectual benefits. Physically, it promotes coordination, agility, and cardiovascular training. Socially, it enhances teamwork, leadership, and communication skills for individual growth. Educationally, it provides students with the opportunity to excel in a sport that demands discipline, determination, and logical thinking. All these benefits transcend the playing surface, impacting students' overall scholastic success and individual growth. Increased School Spirit and Community Engagement: Having a new sport like boys volleyball will boost school spirit and enhance student participation. It will offer an additional source of student participation, bring fans to home games, and create enthusiasm across the school community. The new team will also be a focus of school pride and esprit de corps, highlighting our school's commitment to providing diverse and inclusive athletic programs. Diversification of Athletic Offerings: We now have few sports for male students in most high schools. Including boys volleyball, we provide the male students with more choices so that they can explore other athletic opportunities. Diversification, besides enhancing the school's athletic program, also enhances the overall student satisfaction and retention in extracurricular activities. Expected Participation

We estimate that 20-25 students will be interested in competing on the boys volleyball team. This is based on the increased popularity of volleyball and other sports competed at school. Additionally, the athletic department survey suggests that there is considerable interest in new team sports and students want to compete in athletics that provide competitive challenge and community involvement.

The program will begin with a varsity squad of 12-15 players. As the program grows and word spreads among students, we expect numbers of participants to grow in subsequent years. As volleyball grows as a sport at our school, we see the possibility of adding junior varsity squads or expanding the size of the varsity squad to accommodate more interested players.

There is also high growth potential in the program, with forecasted growths in student activity and participation.

I strongly recommend that we proceed with implementing boys volleyball next school year because it will greatly benefit our students and our school community.
