CASE STUDY Drug manufacturer Pfizer states on its website, "Our corporate social investment strategy focuses on leveraging the full range of the company's resources-people, skills, expertise and funding-to broaden access to medicines and strengthen health care delivery for underserved people around the world." One of Pfizer's commitments to social responsibility is eliminating blinding trachoma, a bacterial eye infection that, without treatment, causes people's eyelashes to rub their eyeballs, leading to pain, scarring, and blindness. Blinding trachoma is avoidable if its victims receive eyelid surgery, antibiotics to treat the infection, education about hygiene, and environmental improvements. The disease is most often found in the poorest and most remote parts of South and Central America, Africa, Australia, the Middle East, and Asia. Pfizer manufactures Zithromax, a macrolide antibiotic related to erythromycin. The drug is especially good for treating blinding trachoma because it has to be taken only once to be effective. Pfizer agreed to donate all of the Zithromax needed to eliminate the disease by 2020. Two of Pfizer's actions in this effort are shown in the following table.
