Developing Business Case

A business case study "is a description of an actual situation, commonly involving a decision, a challenge, an opportunity, a problem or an issue faced by a person (or persons) in an organization."

Your job is to develop a decision focus business case based on a potential problem / particular issue that you have experienced firsthand in your organization or develop a business case based on an article that you have read in a newspaper about a company. The case must be based on Bangladesh context.

The business case could be based on any of the following disciplines: Accounting, Business Ethics, Entrepreneurship, Finance, General Management, HR, IT, International Business, Marketing & Sales, Operation Management, Organizational Behavior, Social Enterprise, Strategy and Supply Chain Management.

Different case writers will use different formats but the following structure is suggested (not mandatory) for case writing:

1. Opening Paragraph:

The opening paragraph should state dramatically the case issue or problem. It should identify the major actors / characters, the company and suggest the issue or decision facing the company / actors. A good starting should create dramatic interest that will motive the reader to go on and with a hook upon which to hang the data that come next. Remember the significance of 'first impression'. It is important to be brief here.

2. BACKGROUND/CONTEXT:

In the background, tell only enough history to suggest the culture and values that will be important to your case discussion. Remember that your case story is not the company history, but the history of the particular problem or decision you are presenting. If you go on too long in this section, your reader will lose sight of the problem you so carefully set up in your case opening. Keep asking yourself: "Does this piece of information shed light on the case subject?" You may need to include some relevant data or background information about the industry, company, customers, competitors and the context in which it operates.

3. CASE STORY.

In this section, you will typically return to the dilemma faced by the manager or the problem or the issue you discussed in the opening. At this point, it is desirable to include comments from company executives portraying the perspective of the key decision-makers in the company. The best cases convey the ambiguity present in business situations. The perspective of the key decision-makers in the company brings realism (or personality) and a tension to the case. There are usually at least two apparently viable alternative solutions to the case which forces readers to evaluate and recommend a course of action with imperfect information.

4. CONCLUSION

In this section, you are summarizing the focal decision point. Try to generate urgency and importance of the decision to the organization or case character. A good conclusion will suggests options and considerations that the reader will think about after finishing reading the case.

Few Tips:

To make writing a case easy, pick a model case, a case that you have read in your MBA program or elsewhere. Read the case again, but this time, follow the structure and sequence of it. When writing your case, check if it is possible to replicate the structure of your model case in your own writing.

Few things you should be careful about and want to avoid:

the case with no clear decision or focus.

the case with too much information in it (unmanageable detail).

the case with no structure, or shifting structure.

the case with no actors.

the case with no controversy.

the case with no drama or tension (boring--selectivity is often the key here. Don't swamp your story with too many sub-plots.)

The group that can develop a case which is very practical and relevant in our country context and that address a unique but interesting problem / situation (originality / novelty) will clearly have the chance to score a better mark.

Problems : Deliver Timing delayed for unskilled workforce, sometimes apps or application creating problem recent time.

Solution taken by : Optimize delivery routes, Enable real-time route modification, Prioritize appropriately, Train existing employees, apply workforce skills in a different way.

Background :

In December 2013, Foodpanda Bangladesh started its journey with just 5 employees. The goal was to simplify the life of customers by making food delivery as convenient and affordable as possible. The Foodpanda app is the ultimate solution for users to order take-away from the best selection of restaurants around them in three simple steps. After three years in operation, Foodpanda currently employs more than 200 highly motivated and dedicated employees who are constantly striving to offer the best food delivery experience for its users. Foodpanda initially started its operations in Dhaka, and soon after, expanded to Chittagong and Sylhet, with more than 700 plus vendors on its portal.Zubair B.A. Siddiky is the Co-founder and Managing Director of Foodpanda (stylized foodpanda) Bangladesh. Over the past few years the company, which launched its operation in Dhaka in 2013, has grown significantly.

Foodpanda Bangladesh continues to grow strongly with more than 300,000 app downloads and 100 percent revenue growth year on year.

Plot :

Three managers, Arup (Manager), Devjani (IT specialist), and Muna (Accountance Manager), meet to discuss the issues. Developing the conversion in the meeting about problem and solutions or alternatives. Don't need to mentioned directly but causally. You may suggest severally alternatives. Recently, Covid - 19 situation people demand huge for online food. But problem is that deliver or order timing delayed for unskilled workforce, sometimes apps or application creating problem recent time.
