Mechanistic structures are designed to cause people to behave in predictable ways. The organic structure enhances flexibility and quick response to changing conditions. Successful organizations strike the right balance between mechanical and organic structures.

Contingency theory argues that to manage its environment effectively, an organization must design its structure and control systems to suit the environment in which it operates.
