Direct Strategy Assignment 20% DUE Friday, March 17, by 11:59pm *this is an individual assignment*

This assignment is in two parts. In Part I, you will respond to a few short-answer questions in full sentences, and in Part II, you will write a memo following the scenario below. No research/outside sources, AI, or other help is allowed; you must write an original message in your own words. Do not copy phrases/sentences from the scenario to put into your writing; rephrase what you need to use from the scenario when you write your message, adding specific detail where needed. The Scenario You are the Director of Human Resources for a small retail chain (you choose which one). Your company is providing a new training session to all managers, and you need to inform them of this news and request that they attend. The training is focused on health and safety in the workplace (you can define this further). Once the managers complete this training, they can then deliver the same training information to their staff at each location. You want to advise the management team of this training, why its being given/why you need them to take it, the benefits of completing it, and what the training will entail, among other details. Your task is to write the managers a memo to explain all of this. Create any necessary details, such as reasons, date/time/location details, other training details, etc. In the opening of your message, you should state the purpose for writing the memo to advise of this information and ask that they attend. In the body of your memo (likely two paragraphs, since you need a list), you should include the following information: - Why this training is happening and how this will help the team (reader benefits) - What the managers will learn about and how they will eventually teach their staff this information - Details about when/where the training occurs; anything else you want the staff to know - As part of the body of the message, include a short, bulleted list (of three or four points). The information you choose to bullet is up to you. Refer to the Week 9 notes on how to construct a bulleted list. In the closing of your memo, give a reader action/next steps. This likely relates to notifying you of their attendance at the training. Offer contact information, deadlines, and thanks & goodwill. Formatting Requirements for Your Assignment Submission In a Word document, type your responses to Part I on the first page (use full sentences), and then start your memo (with a memo header) on the second page. In other words, youll have two pages to submit as a single Word file. Your memo should follow block format: the text is flush left (NOT justified), with no indented paragraphs and one space between paragraphs, and no longer than one page (aim for at least of a page), with single-spaced text. Add your name and student number in a header. Use 11- or 12-sized font, Times or Calibri. Part I: Analyze Audience & Purpose (5 marks) Keeping in mind the information provided in the scenario (plus any additional information you feel should be included create any necessary details), type your answers to the following questions in complete sentences. Please number your answers. To make the task of answering these questions easier, imagine your readers sitting across from you as you write. Consider what they need to know to understand your message and be motivated to act. 1. As the Director, why are you writing this memo? What is the purpose of this message overall? 2. What questions would your readers have about the information you are giving them? What specific details do they need to, or want to, know? 3. What can you do to help your readers understand your message and complete the reader action you note in the conclusion? Hint: think of how the direct strategy is organized and about our business writing principles here. Part II: Compose Your Memo (20 marks) Write a Direct Strategy Memo for this scenario, creating all the detail you need. Your memo will use clear Direct Strategy to organize the content and consider audience & purpose. follow the guidelines for memo formatting, particularly the header and the use of block format. See Week 8 notes. contain one bulleted list that is grammatically parallel and introduced with a proper lead-in sentence. See Week 9 notes. be no longer than one page in length (aim for at least of a page), including the header.
