Directions: In this module, you will design instruction for native and nonnative English speakers by creating a lesson plan focused on phonology and/or morphology. You don't actually have to teach this lesson...only plan it. Use the lesson plan template at the link below. Be sure to highlight the parts of the lesson plan where you've targeted phonology (e.g., phonological awareness or phonemic awareness) and/or morphology and where you designed learning for both native and nonnative English speakers. In this Lesson plan what would the syllable task and decoding + irregular (learned) words be?

STRUCTURED LITERACY Word Study Target LESSON PLAN

Wichita State University

Teacher Apprentice Program

Name:

Kellie Lawless

Grade Level:

6th

Materials Needed:

  • Interactive whiteboard or Interactive TV.
  • Word cards
  • Phonics manipulatives (letter tiles, magnetic letters)
  • Worksheets on syllable division and morpheme identification
  • Audio resources for pronunciation practice
  • Phoneme segmentation games

Universal Design:

Representation: Students will have options for word cards like print, digital, text-to-speech, and audio translation. They will also have access to visual support through pictures and words along with auditory support from teachers and peers through conversation with each other. Havingaccess to multiple means of representation allows students to actively participate in the activity, learn academic vocabulary, and engage with teachers and peers. Also, students will use visual aids and gestures for explaining concepts, and audio examples for phonemic distinctions.

Engagement: For ELL students I/para will verbally go over the word cards with them one-on-one, so they have a better understanding of it and have a collaborative discussion to gain an idea of the knowledge learned. I will give the students multiple ways to interact with the material and be able to show what they have learned. There will also be interactive games for phoneme and morpheme recognition; and peer collaboration.

Action & Expression:students will be able to use collaborative work and graphic organizers that will support and allow students to express what they know inclusively. They also may be able to do an audio recording of their learning and supplement it with visuals. Oral practice sessions, written exercises, and group presentations on learned concepts.
