Progress and Barriers

Week one of the program has laid a solid foundation and provided clear guidance to meet the course's expectations and the literature review deliverables. As I've shared in previous reflections, managing competing priorities amidst professional demands has been a significant challenge. However, I'm pleased to report that I've made substantial progress in making appropriate corrections to Chapter One. I'm confident that these adjustments reflect the level of consistency and alignment expected in the dissertation. I've also made significant strides in reviewing and collating materials to aid the literature review, demonstrating my commitment and dedication to this task.

Reflection of Video

The presenter in the video provided useful tips on conducting a literature search and finding suitable papers for the literature review. Academic instructors and supervisors generally have in-depth knowledge of helpful material for varying topics as well as the corresponding sources (Feely, 2020). While reviewing related studies is crucial in the literature review phase, candidates are encouraged to engage academic experts to provide guidance (Feely, 2020). Candidates may be required to do a literature review or a systematic review, depending on the type of research. Systematic reviews are highly detailed and are appreciated for topics related to natural sciences. Conversely, a literature review may appropriately support research on leadership. A literature review summarizes the reason for the study and provides an overview of the researched topic but may be limited by reviewer biases due to its non-systematic nature (Feely, 2020). James and Salter (2014) advanced an extensive review of existing literature that both supports and counters the research topic; researchers must expressly position the purpose of the study to readers.

The review process is a structured three-step approach, including scoping, examining the research question, and determining keywords (Feely, 2020). Feely (2023) added that using a systematic review approach can be particularly useful for those struggling to find suitable sources through random searches. Scoping helps researchers identify potential gaps in available studies and whether the research question has been adequately addressed (Feely, 2020). The presenter highlighted two practical, systematic approaches that researchers could consider. These approaches, the PICO, and the SPIDER methods, can help structure the research methods concisely while defining the research questions (Feely, 2020). For instance, the PICO method dissects the questions to identify the population, intervention, comparison, and outcome associated with the study (Feely, 2020). These methods are invaluable in helping candidates identify keywords and possible alternative words to aid the search. The final phase is executing the search using the words identified in association with the selected method above (Feely, 2020).
