Discuss how these three depictions of David differ in their approach to the subject, how they relate to Humanism, and how those differences reflect the era in which they were created. Which do you feel is most engaging, and why? The bronze statue of David, by Donatello, portraits a young David standing on the head of the defeated giant, Goliaths. David is depicted unclothed, wearing only a hat and a pair of boots. Donatello created the statue of King David during the Early Renaissance, where nude was a major inspiration for art, to represent human perfection. The Early Renaissance was inspired by Humanism, a movement that preceded the Early Renaissance. The essence of Humanism is that humans have control over themselves and beliefs. The statue of young David standing on top of his adversary's portrays the idea of victory, which is the point of emphasis in the Early Renaissance culture. The focus of the Early Renaissance was the man being victorious, a conquistador of your own life. Donatello designed David with great details, per instance, David looking down, how David is holding the sword, and how David's body is standing gives the statue a sense tranquility, which is another characteristic of Early Renaissance. Another artist that used the character David, from the bible, was the High Renaissance artist Michelangelo. The statue of David, by Michelangelo is made of marble and represents a different idea of David. The artist depicts David holding a slingshot, a frowny face, and a penetrate look at his adversary, as if David is studying his opponent, the giant Goliath. Different from Donatello's David, Michelangelo's vision is David right before the combat. Instead of showing David's victory the artist portrays the human potential and power, characteristic the High Renaissance also influenced by Humanism. The artist also designed David with a contrapposto and fine lines, but the idea of space is not limited to the sculpture. Instead, it feels as if Goliath is standing right in front of David. The artist Bernini took a different approach with his 1623 David. Bernini's interpretation of Humanism was based on the individual's actions, a characteristic of the Baroque culture. The artist interprets humanism creating a statue of David right in middle of the battle. Bernini beautifully designed David's body in motion attacking Goliath. Bernini also did a great job in sculpting the muscles of David's body contracting.
