One evening, during Zoe's shift at the fast- food restaurant, her former manager, Tori, stopped by to say hello. "I heard you enrolled. in an online college," Tori said with a big smile. "I'm so proud of you!" Four years ago, when she was 17, Zoe didn't really know who she was or what she wanted for her future. She and her mother had a difficult relationship and had moved around a lot. Whenever Zoe made a friend at a new school, she found herself becoming a mirror image of the friend-wearing similar clothes and adopting the same interests. After Zoe and some friends were caught vandalizing their high school, Tori had made time each week to talk with her. She asked Zoe questions that made her think about her values and goals.
