Student posted answer to above discussion:
For a graphic designer like myself, there are challenges to determining if a project was successful. By standard definition, a project is successful if it is delivered on time, under budget, with the highest of quality and customer satisfaction (Pinto, 2012). Sometimes the results of our efforts cannot be measured immediately, except with online advertising where analytics make it easy to determine if a campaign is working. In other mediums, I might design something that I think is portfolio worthy but if the client does not see results over time, then the project was a failure.
For that reason, I ask several questions in our initial meeting to determine who the audience is, what they respond to, and what the measurable goals are. If the client is unsure, I mention that they may need more market research or tell them that my team will do the research. Without research, were just decorating without a real strategy.
Another factor that can make project management challenging for designers is when there are layers of approvals. Client acceptance plays a huge role in a corporate environment because the client may be an internal manager who reports to others on the org chart whom they must seek approval from. And even when approval is gained internally, the work may have to be presented to the external client. If the external client is satisfied with the direction and deliverables, the ultimate test of acceptance lies in the hands of the customers.
