Research Topic: Homelessness in Minnesota

Homelessness means that an individual does not have a permanent place of home. There are various factors which have been associated with homelessness. homelessness is not a mental illness; however, it can cause threats to the mental health of homeless people. The causes and consequences of homelessness are complex. Homelessness affects a diverse cross-section of the population in Minnesota that includes women with children, seniors, and youth. Understanding homelessness requires a grasp of several social issues such as poverty, affordable housing, disabilities, and mental health. Homelessness occurs when people can not afford to pay rent. While circumstances can vary, the main reason people experience homelessness is because they cannot find affordable housing. It is the scarcity of affordable housing in Minnesota, especially in the Metro aeras where homelessness is more prevalent, that is behind their ability to acquire or maintain housing. According to Ellem, et. Al (2019) introduction, while services aimed to be responsive to young people, the challenges of providing support in a non-metropolitan context could create a context in which young people either disengaged from services or poor response resulted in systemic escalation to crisis.
