INSTRUCTIONS: At the foundation of management is control. Controlling, shaping & steering employee behavior in productive directions is what managers are paid to do. Control can take many forms from laws, rules, policies (called Bureaucratic control), group norms, expectations & trust (called Clan control) as well as prices and costs (called Market control)...in this assignment, you will create a fictitious organization (it can be whatever you want) and outline the control mechanisms that you would put in place if you were the owner/founder of the venture. This assignment is designed to demonstrate how closely linked the topics of control, motivation, organizational culture & managerial decision making really are. I encourage creativity, but under reasonable circumstances: For example, do not just state that your organization has an unlimited budget so you can pay people whatever they want ($ is a powerful control mechanism, Im sure you have noticed!)...unlimited money to spend does not reflect the reality of your future manager career, so remember to be practical when writing out your ideas. Keep in mind: you can reward behavior you want as easily as punish behavior you do not want.
Describe your organization & answer the following questions What good or service does your organization produce? What is its mission and goals; how would it make $? How many people do you envision working there after year 1? What does the organizational structure & design looks like? Who is the owner (you!)? Vice presidents? Draw an organizational chart Google image Organizational Chart. What will the physical workplace look & feel like? (offices, warehouse, open design, cubicles, business travel?) Describe the organizational culture you are trying to create What are the 5 most important values of your organization? Now, describe your control systems Start by defining Bureaucratic, Clan & Market control. Next, describe how you will motivate your employees? Outline 5 to 7 major rules/policies that employees will have to follow. Do this with detail, not just no stealing...Instead, write out why these rules/policies are important to you & the organization. If an employee violates a rule or policy, how would you respond as a manager? As an owner? How would you measure & monitor the job performance of your employees?
If your managers start to notice de-motivated employees, how would you attempt to change this? o If you (the owner) notice de-motivated managers/Vice Presidents how would you respond? What resources are needed to motivate these people? How might you accomplish controlling performance or motivating employees if you could NOT fire them (because of contracts, etc.)?
Other control issues What if your organization is a family business? How would you control your family members if you had authority & power over them? (keep in mind you need them & care about their well-being!) When would you, as a manager or owner, rely on trust to empower employees? How can you be sure employees can practice self-control? Describe 3 or 4 minor personal rules that you would communicate to employees? That is, are there ways that YOU like things done that employees would be oblivious about unless you told them and explained yourself (i.e., clan control)? Describe 3 or 4 fun or creative ideas you could implement to control & improve employee outcomes (satisfaction, motivation & performance). *Pretend that you hired me (your professor, Dr. Hinrichs), how would you get me to do what you want & work hard??? It is difficult to influence people with established status and expertise...think creatively and do some research online. **EXTRA CREDIT**
REMEMBER STOP & THINK!! As an owner or manager, you have a lot of responsibility and you have peoples livelihoods in your hands it is your decisions that make a BIG impact on peoples short-term success (can I pay my bills this month?) as well as their long-term career success (will I ever get a promotion?)...so take these ideas seriously & give detailed answers. Often times a managers job is on the line too when employee motivation and performance is poor. All that said, creative solutions are welcome.
