do you agree or disagree on the paragraph? explain why
The shrinking of jury duty has been a problem in U.S as long as it has existed, so it is unclear if it has gotten better or worse in the previous decades. Less than 50% of all citizens selected for jury duty actually show up to court due to their busy situations according to NBC News. (NBC News, Courts Struggle To Get Jurors To Serve, Paragraph 6) Whilst this may be true, it is unfair to excpect average civillians to drop what they are doing to report to jury duty. Serving jury means not working, not going to the grocery store, or not going home and watching tv so it is no suprised that most citizens have no interest in serving jury when they are selected and often flake on their duties. Most trials are also very boring and have no beneficial gain for the citizens who must attend.
Citizens do not want to attend jury duty for many reasons. To begin, juriisdictions are not very polite to jurors, some judges are very rude to potential jurors who did not choose to be there and are not being paid to be there so this can turn people off of serving in jury ever again. It can also be very uncomfortable to decide the fate of another person who you have never met. This being said, there are many racists and other individuals who will single out an individual just because of the way they appear so you cannot trust just anyone to decide what happens to someone who may be innocent, but proven guilty because of an unprofessional jury crowd. Trial can also be delayed because of a lack of other jurors not attending when they are supposed to and this happens due to a lack of punishment when you are absent to your jury date. According to the same NBC News article, "In Tulare County, Calif., where the trial of two brothers accused of murdering five people in a bar had to be delayed a day because not enough prospective jurors showed up..." (NBC News, Courts Struggle To Get Jurors To Serve, Paragraph 23) This is unfair to those who have showed up on time to serve their duty, having to come back and give away more of their precious time.
To improve the Jury system and make citizens actually want to attend when selected there must be some sort of benefit for the citizens chosen to attend. According to Richard Lobb, a Public Relations major from Quora.com, "Americans dislike jury duty because they are extremely job-oriented and have to take time off from their jobs to answer the call to jury duty. Then they have to sit there in the jury assembly room and wait all day to see if their name is called. Jury duty usually just seems like a boring waste of time." (Quora, Richard Lobb, Why do Americans dislike jury duty so much) If citizens were awarded with more incentive for their generous use of time, more people would show up when selected. Many people will serve for many hours and earn less than a minimum wages worth of their time, and obviously the jury system does not have enough money to pay these individuals reasonably for their time so a different reward must be funded
