When creating our organization's database, we must ensure that we clearly specify the roles and responsibilities of the stewards and the administrators. Common sense would tell us that administrators have access to modify the database while stewards have more of read capabilities to the database. While this may be correct in some cases, there are a few duties that intertwine amongst the stewards and the administrators. "A steward is a person assigned the responsibility of ensuring that organizational applications properly support the organization's enterprise goals for data quality" (Hoffer et al., 2019, p. 513). An administrator is a person who is responsible for the physical database design and for dealing with the technical issues associated with managing a database (Hoffer et al., 2019, p. 386).
Some duties that I have found that are specific to a steward are collecting, collating, and triaging issues and problems with data, monitoring and enforcing data governance policies, and monitoring data usage. On the other hand, specific duties that an administrator is responsible for are database backup and recovery, database development and design, and ensure data integrity and make necessary adjustments or upgrades to the database environment.Stewards and administrators do share some similar responsibilities like security management like establishing guidelines for data security and enforcing compliance with regulatory requirements, as well as managing standard business definitions and metadata.
