Do you agree with this analysis? Why or why not?
In my own opinion, the death penalty does not deter too many people from killing other humans. It is not a deterrent. First, let us look at the video Dr. Bremer asked us to watch. According to the (State Bar of Georgia, 2016, May 22), Mr. Furman broke into Mr. Georgia's home and killed him. He was originally sentenced to die but then appealed his case. He fought the death penalty by arguing that it violated the 14th Amendment. here he used his race to appeal. He gave two different stories which they should have seen he was lying because of the different statements he gave regarding the situation. Secondly, Furman was in someone else's home uninvited and late at night. If he had not attempted to break into the home then Georgia would have still been alive. So he was sentenced to prison and eventually got paroled and burglarized another home and got sentenced to 20 more years in prison.
I do not believe that the death penalty violates the 8th amendment in today's time. According to (Death penalty, n.d.), The Supreme Court has ruled that the death penalty does not violate the 8th amendment ban on cruel and unusual punishment, but the Eighth Amendment does shape certain procedural aspects regarding when a jury may use the death penalty and how it must be carried out.
