The centralized enterprise network of City Bank in USA was using Norton connections called an app as a social platform for collaboration, cooperation, and consolidation. It contained very good features for employee profiles; communities of people with common interests and expertise; blogs; wikis; viewing, organizing, and managing tasks; forums for exchanging ideas with others. It had tools to conduct customer satisfaction surveys and opinion polls. It also had a feature to view fellow employees home page to understand the social status and related data. In the initial years of using the technology there was not much benefit enjoyed by the company. After six years of usage the management started wide spread collaboration of its employees. They found out seven Key performance indicators (KPIs) that will determine the success of the company. Based on these findings they started setting goals. One of the goal set by the companys top management was to increase the level of collaboration and networks across the regions, markets and levels in order to facilitate knowledge sharing. These collaboration efforts are now paying off: 60% of employees are now every day active in the companys enterprise social network. The collaboration systems improved knowledge sharing, better flow of information which helped the company to reduce operating costs with improved efficiency. There are positive and negative outcomes for the social media capabilities in an organization. The information revolution that social networks brings can be rich and unique. It will help organizations across borders to improve their way of functioning by adding value to organizational productivity, innovation and efficiency. But at the same time social network is a tool which may also lead to an unhealthy environment of criticism in an organization. Most of the employees are guided by conflicting ideas and interests which may reduce the morale and productivity.
