Does it really help to run hot water over a tight metal lid on a glass jar before trying to open it? Explain your answer. Good evening, Leaders, I think this is a rather simple question to answer. I have known about this physics trick, since, I was a young boy struggling to open pickle jars, LOL! It's all about thermal expansion. When things heat up, they expand. Different materials expand at different rates. Metals, like our jar lid, expand more than glass when heated (Halliday, Resnick, & Walker, 2014). So, the hot water makes the lid bigger, and it's easier to unscrew. But be careful. Heating things up too fast can cause them to break (Callister & Rethwisch, 2018). So, heat the lid slowly and evenly. References: Halliday, D., Resnick, R., & Walker, J. (2014). Fundamentals of Physics. Wiley. Callister, W. D., & Rethwisch, D. G. (2018).
