Re: Course Reflection Memo

My biggest "lesson learned" was that professional writing is completely different than academic writing or personal writing. In professional writing, you have to make sure your writing is clear and concise. It must be void of any grammar and punctuation mistakes. It must be well written and easy to understand to the person receiving it. I've also learned that working in a group is important. In business you often collaborate so being able to communicate effectively, compromise and be flexible to others in imperative.

My favorite assignment was the group assignments. I know that will probably come as a shock to you because my group had a lot of issues. This assignment taught me something about myself that I didn't know. I was unaware that my skills of working in a group were lacking. Now that I know I plan to implement changes. I will use the knowledge I have learned from this class to work better in groups. The assignment I liked the least was the resume assignment but that's only because I turned it in a day late and lost 30 points. That was detrimental to my grade.

What I learned about professional writing is that it is significantly different from academic writing. The major differences are the audience which is normally collegues, clients and other businesses. The purpose for professional writing aims to commuicate specific information. The tone is more formal and concise. The structure for business correspondence follows specific formats like memos, letters and e-mails. Professional writing is unlike the academic writing I have been use to. I have learned a lot on how to communicate in a professional manner.

I've learned that I need to work on being apart of a group. I need to work on my communication skills within the group. I can't use to the same skills I have as a business owner in a group setting. It was definitely challenging for me. Additionally, I need to work on my professional writing skills. I will use everything I learned in this course to advance my skills.

The writing skills I learned in this class will certainly help me in my future classes and business endeavors. I will be concise in my writing while avoiding making any grammar and punctuation mistakes. I will be mindful when working in a group setting. I will use effective communication and be willing to compromise on the assignment/project.

I will implement what I've learned in this class in my workplace in many ways. I will communicate a lot better now that I've learned how to communicate in a business style rather than the personal style I was using previously. I have learned time management skills that I will implement at my workplace. I have realized that sometimes I wait until last minute to complete the things I need to do so I will definitely be changing that. Lastly, I will be focusing on how to work in a group setting better. I pair the students I teach into groups but don't normally work with anyone myself. I have learned through this class that is a weakness of mine. I want to keep challenging myself to be the best version of myself so that will be something I learn more about and implement in my work life.
