A McDelivery order is usually placed via an online portal. A customer would first have to register for an account with the portal providing his or her name, delivery address, email address and telephone number. After registration, McDonalds online ordering system would present an online menu to the customer. The customer would then add items into a shopping cart and once the customer is satisfied with his or her order, the customer would then proceed to checkout. At checkout, McDonalds online ordering system would automatically check if the customer is a new customer or an existing one. If the customer is an existing customer, the system would provide the customer with additional recommendations based on his or her previous purchase history. On the other hand, if the customer is new, the system would provide the customer with additional recommendations based on existing promotions and the most popular items on the menu. If the additional recommendations are accepted, the new menu items would be added to the order. The customer would then be directed to the payment page. If the customer is new, the system would ask the customer to enter his or her credit card details, which would subsequently be stored to expedite future orders. If the customer is an existing customer, the system would retrieve his or her previous credit card details and ask if the customer would like to pay with the same card. If the customer opts to pay with a different card, he or she would then proceed to enter the details of the new card. Once this is done, the customer would review the order and if he or she is satisfied that both the order and payment details provided are correct, the customer could proceed to confirm the order. Once the order is confirmed, the order is routed to the McDonalds outlet that is the closest to the delivery address. Based on a real time inventory management database, McDonalds online ordering system would automatically determine if the outlet has sufficient ingredients to fulfil the order. If there are insufficient ingredients, the order would be routed to the next closest outlet. This process continues until an outlet able to meet the order is found. However, in the rare instance where the outlet is more than 40km away from the delivery address, the system would notify a customer service officer, who would then call the customer using the phone number provided to inform the customer that the order cannot be fulfilled. Otherwise, the order is sent to the outlet and processed by the kitchen like any other order.
