Tris(acetylacetonato)iron(III) (Fe(acac)3) can be synthesized through the coordination reaction between acetylacetonate ligands and the iron (III) ion. Metal ions can bind with neutral molecules or anions, called ligands, to form a coordination complex such as Fe(acac)3, utilizing the ligand (Lewis base) to form a coordinate bond with the metal ion (Lewis acid). (acac C5O₂H7) a) Draw the Lewis structure of the acac ligand and use VSEPR theory to characterize the geometry at each carbon centre. b) The two oxygen atoms in each acac ligand coordinate to the iron atom in Fe(acac) 3.
