While Pasteurs colleagues believed the phenomena was nothing more than a coincidence that would work itself out in a larger sample, Pasteur believed that he had accidently discovered that the weakened germs left in the chickens was able to fight off the second round of the same germs. Pasteurs ability to submit to more possible theories and interpretations than any of his fellow colleagues is what led to his breakthrough discovery in immunology. During the time she was getting her Ph.D., she was tasked with designing a hand for a full-scale robot being developed by the MIT robotics lab where she was attending college. Engineers before had always used the same methods for designing the hand that had always produced less than mediocre results. Yoky approached the task differently than the engineers before her. She would ask herself questions like what makes the hand dexterous and what role the palm plays in grasping objects and how does the thumb play a role in grasping objects. Asking these questions forced her to extend her research into fields other than robotics. By thinking like an outsider, Yoky was able to avoid the ABC syndrome and the technical lock that stymied all of her other engineers. (Greene, 41:12) Design Thinking Design thinking refers to the set of cognitive, strategic, and practical procedures used by designers in the process of designing, and to the body of knowledge that has been developed about how people reason when engaging with design problems. The five stages of design thinking are empathize, define, ideate, prototype, and test. In my career I will be able to use this method of design while trying to maximize user experience. First, I will empathize with my users by researching their needs. Second, I will acknowledge or define my users needs or problems. Third, I will brainstorm ideas to solve my users problems. Next, I will start to create solutions. Finally, I will test the solutions. The last three steps of this process can be repeated until the desired results are accomplished. (2022, interaction-design.org) Conclusion I feel like by following Greens strategies for attaining mastery will increase my chances for success by forcing me outside of my comfort zone and in turn forcing me to open my mind to influences I would not normally entertain.
