Directions

It is lunchtime at work and the following events take place in a matter of thirty minutes. Read through the series of events and answer the prompts that follow each event.

Event #1: You are a sales manager at an advertising agency. You run into a senior sales professional, Allen, who starts to unload his frustrations about needing to get his work done and being asked to babysit "a bunch of newbies". He says this in response to the fact that the company recently hired five new sales representatives. You are known as a manager who listens actively to your team and so you give Allen your undivided attention.

1. As the sales manager, what style or styles of listening should you apply here? Explain your answer.
2. Describe what nonverbal cues you should be displaying to Allen.

Event #2: While listening to Allen, you let out a chuckle at his "babysit" remark, and instantly regret the laugh. You notice that two of the new sales representatives have clearly overheard your conversation with Allen. They approach you in your office after lunch discuss what occurred at lunch.

1. Using what you learned from the article in the module titled, "How to Defuse an Office Conflict (Links to an external site.)" answer the discuss how you would use the LEAF strategy to resolve the conflict.

Grading Rubric

Replies to Discussion Prompts (6 Points): The student addresses each prompt fully and completely in at least three to four sentences; answers include relevant language and key terms from the learning materials in the module.

Writing Mechanics (1.5 Points): Writing is free of spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors.

Replies to Others (2.5 Points): Students replies to at least two other students with meaningful responses that add value to the discussion.
