During week one, I was asked to give some examples of how statistics were used in my career field. I am currently in school to accomplish my degree in business, so when asked the question initially, I came from the perspective of business. I am currently an independent journalist, and I believe I picked business because I couldn't think of how statistics would be used in journalism. However, now that I am at the end of the course, I have discovered ways that statistics is in fact used in journalism.

Therefore, when it comes to revising what I initially wrote in Week 1, I would start by making my subject based around journalism, something that I am actively engaged in.

Now, the first paragraph that talks of statistics "provides a foundational understanding of data analysis, interpretation, and decision making" (Microsoft, 2025), I would keep the same. There are times in journalism when data analysis may be the basis of your entire broadcast or written piece. Also, knowing how to read different charts can come in handy when reporting news. Also when it comes to finding the best times to publish bodies of work or now with new technology "post" online, you can find the best times and days to do it, by finding out the statistics of when people are likely to browse the internet, read certain topics of news and their preferred method of consuming news and information. These are things that can help a journalist excel in the field.

Statistics can also help with investigative and data journalism. Journalists can use statistics to detect trends in crime rates or reveal injustice by finding out the statistical disparities, like income or racial bias.

You can also use statistics to help journalism because you can give people a visual representation of data, such as charts, which can make complex statistics easier to understand.

There is also something called "predictive journalism," which is "the incorporation of predictive information such as forecasts, nowcasts or other estimates", all things that fall under the realm of statistics (Fechner & Pentzold, 2025).
