During weeks 3 through 6, you will work with various drug use and overdose data sets and use different visualization techniques that will culminate in your final assignment. These will be used to create your final Tableau Story modeling different visualizations and different data sets.
This assignment will be used to explore the number of drug overdose deaths in the US between 2018 and 2019.
For this assignment, you will need to use the CDC data sets from their website,
Drug Overdose Death Rates -2019Links to an external site.
Drug Overdose Death Rates -2018Links to an external site.
1. For 2019, scroll to the bottom of the Data Table and click the blue button "Download Data (CSV)"
2. For 2018, COPY the columns of data for 2018 displayed on the webpage in the table to the right of the columns already in the Excel file for 2019.
DATA CLEANSING - This step is critical. We need to now pivot the data to make it in a useable format for analysis known as "tidy data" To learn more about tidy data, please see the resources at the bottom of this assignment. (Required)
In tidy data:
Each variable must have its own column.
Each observation must have its own row.
Each type of observational unit forms a table.
The data as just pasted violates rule #1, as the variable "deaths" is in two columns. We need to format the data so that the deaths are all in the same column regardless of year. This then allows you to use both years of data in the same view in Tableau. Tableau has some built-in features that will help us with respect to data cleansing of this nature.
Please watch these videos which show you how to obtain the data and complete the data cleansing/prep (pivot data in Tableau) so the data file is ready to use in Tableau.
Step 1) Obtain the Data and do some data cleansing: (4 minutes 28 seconds)
****IN THIS VIDEO - DISREGARD THE STEPS WHERE FOR THE 2018 data it indicates to change Washington DC to District of Columbia ---THIS HAS ALREADY BEEN DONE IN THE 2018 DATA on the website**
Step 2) Continue data prep - Pivot data in Tableau (4 minutes 50 seconds)
Now with the data prepped:
Step 3) Use Tableau built-in Quick Table Calculations - Percent Difference
Step 4) Create a view that displays the Percent Difference for each state. Sort by Percent Difference
Step 5) Watch the video which covers steps 3 & 4(5 minutes 40 seconds)
Your name must be in the title of the visualization. Submit the following 2 files:
TWBX file (packaged Tableau workbook) AND
pdf of the visualizations you created.
