Dynamometer Engine Data Analysis
Download the pressure volume indicator engine data from the Canvas website in the ASCII text file format.
The first column in the file is the crank angle in degrees, the second is the cylinder volume in liter, and the
third is the cylinder pressure in bar. The data are from a research engine at Ford Motor Company in which
the specifics of the engine design are unknown. The goal of this project is to analyze the data to obtain as
much knowledge about the engine itself, the operating conditions, and the performance.
Tasks:
Make plots of (1) P and V versus crank angle (CA),(2) P versus V , and (3)) versus V. Note that
data collection started at a crank angle of 43 before top center of the compression stroke.
Using these plots or the data file, determine the clearance volume (Vc), the displaced volume (Vd),
and the compression ratio.
From the plots, also estimate the crank angles for exhaust valve opening (EVO) and for intake valve
opening (IVO).
From a (Harrington) plot of PV versus crank angle between -40 and +100 crank angle degrees with
=1.27, estimate the spark firing angle, o, and the burn duration .
Determine the net-work from the cycle using the pressure volume data, the pumping work from the
cycle, and the mechanical efficiency.
Determine the indicated mean effective pressure imep.
